Flat Tire? Why the Spare Is a Bridge, Not a Destination
Reviewed by the Rapid Roadside Rescue roadside service team
Most spares are temporary by design
The compact "donut" spare in most trunks is rated for limited speed and distance — often 50 mph and 70 miles. Push past that and you risk overheating the tire and losing control. On a long stretch of Route 5 or the Thruway outside Syracuse, that 50-mph cap also makes you a slow-moving hazard in winter traffic — another reason to get to a shop promptly.
Getting the spare on correctly, torqued properly, and inflated to spec is exactly the kind of thing that goes wrong in a rush on the shoulder.
The dangers of a roadside change
Jacking a car on a slope, on soft ground, or too close to traffic is how vehicles slip off jacks. A professional stabilizes the vehicle, uses proper lift points, and keeps you clear of danger while the work happens.
Get moving, then get it fixed
We mount your spare quickly and safely so you can get to a shop for a permanent tire repair. It is the fastest way off the shoulder and the safest way home.
